Most scientists believe that our climate is changing because
of an over accumulation of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere.
We throw something away, the bin men come and get it and
then they bundle it up and dump it into a great hole in the ground.
These holes are called landfill.
Unfortunately there are two problems with this system.
- We are running out of places to dig big holes that can be
filled with our rubbish.
- All of the matter in the holes gets mixed together and produces
gasses and liquids that are dangerous to the environment and us.
There is also the option of burning our waste, which
sometimes we do - but this has the effect of releasing loads of
dangerous and revolting gases into our environment... |

Did you know..
It takes less energy to make something from recycled
materials than it does from scratch!
We can reuse things dead easily and we can recycle stuff -
glass, paper, metal, wood, textiles, vegetable stuff - even plastic is
recyclable.

 |
There are loads of things that we can do to save the
dustbin men from having to lug massive bags of rubbish from your house
to the landfill..
The most obvious one is to not buy it in the first place!
|

|
Refuse to accept plastic wrapped fruit and
vegetables... |

|
Rebel when they want you to buy something
that has four layers of packaging on it... |
 |
Decline a new plastic bag at the till... |

|
Turn away from drinks in plastic bottles in
favour for those in glass, or paper or tins... |
 |
Refill bottles - particularly water
bottles... |
 |
Reject disposables in favour of reusables...! |
|
 |
Add to the list and cause a revolution in your school...

Even more radical - don't buy it in the first place!
Lend your books and magazines to your mates...
Swap your clothes and toys at swap shops...
Trade your trash and Reclaim your rubbish.
Stuff that you throw away can be very useful..
Waste paper makes new paper (with loads of
bits in - like onion skin and dried flowers) |
 |
Broken crockery is fantastic for mosaics..
Recycled plastic can be made into almost anything you can
think of!
Old vegetables and Hoover dust makes great compost
Glass makes new glass, over and over forever and ever
Basically pretty much everything that we use can be recycled,
which is brilliant!
 |
Less stinking landfills.. |
 |
Fewer foul-smelling incinerators.. |
 |
Less of our environment ruined to make
things from new! |
