Urban Farms - offer various workshops on sustainability topics as well as a chance for students to experience small working farms. For a website offering a search facility to your nearest city farm click here.
Examples of two good local farms:
1) Heeley City Farm is in Sheffield. It is an environmental visitor centre offering a schools education programme and holiday activities. On site is rare breed animals, garden centre, vegetarian cafe plus the South Yorkshire Energy Advice Centre.
2) Meanwood Valley Uban Farm is in Leeds. The 'epicentre' provides an interactive arena for learning more about environmental issues. The farm’s education team helps thousands of school children to experience the natural environment through practical hands-on projects.

Wind Farms - In the UK there are approximately 309 offshore and onshore wind turbine projects, with a total of 3415 turbines churning out 5751.755 megawatts of electricity, thats enough to power 3216088 homes.
There nearest place to see a working wind farm is Ovenden Wind Farm near Halifax, where there are 23 turbines that have been in action since 1993.
Environmental Education Centres
Nearby is St Nicholas Fields in York, a nature reserve built on an old landfill site with the Education center adjcent. There are all sorts of ideas for becoming more sustainable as well as help and advice from people in the know.
Further a field is: The Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Offers "eco-cabin" residential educational experience to schools; the largest visitor centre for sustainable development and alternative energy in the UK; organic food grown on site for the cafe, a specialist bookshop and more.
Forest schools encourage an appreciation of the natural world and build self-esteem and confidence. This is achieved through regular visits to special woodland sites. Individuals can master tasks of increasing complexity and learn the associated social skills.
The Forest Schools website has some local providers of forest school experiance (some are missing so ask around!) and local not-for-profit community group Treesponsibility also has an outdoor classroom and can offer activities.
